Reality Gaming and Me

Posted: December 14, 2010 by tlDesign in New Technology, Updates, Videos

I love reality gaming.  More-over I love the idea of education through gaming; discovering the world in a fun and interesting way which makes the process of learning FEEL like a game.

In the beginning of this project I had big ideas involving geo-location, mulit-user interactivity, and RFID technology. I wanted the scope to be huge and – in effect – the result to be great. Being bogged down by technological constraints  (such as the iPhone flash packager) somewhat limited the scope of our project. On further research it will hopefully be possible to create (possibly in Objective C) a working mulit-user platform which uses geo-location to create a virtual game in the users real world.

One video which inspired the group in our initial planning was Seth Priebatsch TED Talk on a game layer over the world.

Priebatsch talks about the gaming layer on the world and how status is the best motivator. If you see someone with a platinum Mastercard, and all you have is a rewards card, you feel the desire to have that card; to have that status. Priebatsch says that if we are able to weave the desire to be better into our products then people will use them more willingly.

In our reality gaming club I tended to lead discussion and get the ball rolling early on. I created the graphic ‘feel’ of the zombie game and poster which influenced the look of the video. Overall I tried to participate in every avenue available to me in order to learn the technologies we are working with. It was a fun process and is definitely something I look forward to pursuing in my last semester at Sheridan and afterward.

The End Is Near…

I really enjoyed working on this project, my group is full of really talented individuals.  And all of these individuals have really kind and wonderful personalities.

I really enjoyed brainstorming with this group and learning about a new genre.  Not being a gamer or horror film buff, it was interesting to see the passion and knowledge the other group members had for both zombies and gaming and they were kind enough to point me in the right direction while I was researching the project.

I really hope the group continues on to fully develop the game and launch it.  I hope my health cooperates and I am better equipt to assist in that adventure.

Wow, sometimes, working on a  game like this, something that has the potential to become a very large scale/always running event, it is very easy to get too excited and try and pack everything that seems like it could be fun into it.  It is all possible, of course, but it can be overwhelming when you look over what you’re planning to do and seeing that it is all related so to get one thing working you will need lots other things to be working first.  But then you start to think how awesome a game like this would be and  how everyone would enjoy playing it and it seems like it just HAS to be done.

I guess my favourite part of planning a project like this is the idea/planning stage.  I love brain storming and coming up with new ideas and getting excited over those ideas.

Also, although advertising isn’t my favourite thing to do, I love making teaser and trailer videos.  I was able to help work on our teaser trailer for the Zombie Apocalypse game and it was a lot of fun.    JH had a great idea for the teaser and we recorded my voice doing the emergency broadcast.  It was amazing to hear my own voice later  being played back sounding the way it did.  Almost unrecognizable.  The part that I had a lot of fun with was syncing the “Will you survive?” text with the heavy gasping breaths at the end.  Making scary movies and trying to manipulate emotions through video is something I really enjoy doing.

I hope we do get to finish the final product just as we planned, or better.  This game definitely has  a lot of potential!

This game, when complete, is going to be infectious.  you might be thinking, “oh, what a clever pun. Please make more”, but I’m serious.  It has a social aspect (as social as running away from fellow players if they are zombies can be), it has geocaching for survival, it has an online community for score keeping and shairing, it has an amazing soundtrack and great graphics.  I am a huge fan of large scale activities and I feel that this game is going to spread like wildfire – or an uncontrollable infection…

We wanted to create a place where people would be able to come and check out our application! To see what’s new and just what exactly happening in the world of “Zombie Apocalypse!” So as the web developer, I’ve managed to create this blog where anyone can visit and we can continue to provide updates on the latest news on our development, artwork, photos and everything in between.

The brains behind zombies eating brains

A lot of people have been asking about the technology behind the zombie game, so as the lead developer I thought I’d write a quick run down on the behind the scenes.

We use the “flash packager for iPhone” which uses basic adobe air actionscript programming (for android devices it stops there) for iPhones it converts the air code to native objective-c. As for the maps we use google’s static image API which just returns an image based on your latitude and longitude provided by the built in GPS on your phone.
